Good news for immigrant families and their advocates! Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) filed several key amendments supporting family reunification yesterday with the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.  Yesterday was the internal deadline for committee members to file their amendments, and while everyone held their breath seeing if anyone was going to offer the family amendments, Mazie low-and-behold came through (there was never any doubt)!

What amendments?

Here's a breakdown of the amendments that we feel focus on helping families to reunite:

Hirono1-(EAS13437) Exempts the children of certain Filipino WWII veterans from immigration Visa restrictions

Hirono5-(MDM13425) Authorizes U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents to sponsor up to two extended family members if they have not previously sponsored family members

Hirono6-(MDM13534) Retains the categories for older sons/daughters of U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents as well as sibilngs

Hirono9-(EAS13312) Extends the amount of time a married son or daughter who is eligible for a merit-based Visa may be in V nonimmigrant status

So what's the next steps for these amendments?

Now that members have had their opportunity to file committee amendments to the bill, mark-up will now take place (the process in which committee leaders and members debate, amend, and re-write proposed legislation).
